I saw that U-K's Sports Center Garage is closing for expansion work. Where are students and staff supposed to park during construction, and how long is this whole thing going to last?
It's actually wrapping up this summer! The garage closed Monday, May eleventh, and it's set to reopen before Fall twenty twenty-six student move-in. So we're looking at about a three-month closure to finish up what's been a pretty massive project.
What exactly are they doing to it?
This is part of a hundred and fifteen million dollar public-private partnership that's adding twelve hundred new parking spaces. They're doing a one-level vertical expansion of the existing structure, plus a five-level horizontal expansion to the west. It's going to be connected to the Johnson Recreation Center when it's done.
Okay, but where is everyone parking right now?
The good news is U-K Transportation Services has it sorted out. People with R-seven, E-seven, and C-seven permits can park in Hilltop Avenue Garage, and there's no need to return or exchange your permit — you just park there and display your permit as usual. Plus, those permit holders can also use other periphery lots and summer parking areas that are normally off-limits.
And this should all be done by fall semester?
That's the plan. They're targeting to have it reopened before Fall twenty twenty-six student move-in, which gives everyone their regular parking spots back just in time for the new school year. Anyone with questions can contact U-K Transportation Services at eight-five-nine, two-five-seven, fifty-seven fifty-seven.
