I got a question from someone asking about Georgetown Road widening. They remember hearing about plans to widen the road from Lexington to Georgetown years ago but haven't seen any progress. What's the story there?
Good question, and there's actually been real movement on this recently. The Georgetown Road widening project is moving forward as part of the state's two-year road plan, with twenty-one point seven five million dollars allocated to widen U.S. Twenty-five from Kearney Road to Ironworks Road. Construction is set to begin in twenty twenty-six, though the city has been pushing for this widening for nearly twenty years.
Twenty years? That's a long time to wait for road improvements.
Right, but there are good reasons it took so long. It's an expensive project because you have to buy property from some expensive horse farms along the route, plus there are bridges over Interstate seventy-five to deal with. The push for this comes from the number of crashes on that section of Georgetown Road, which anyone who drives that stretch regularly knows is a real concern.
So when people drive through there now, they're still dealing with the same two-lane road?
Exactly. But the widening will turn it into four lanes with two overpass bridgeways included in the project, extending from Spur Road to Kearney Road in Fayette County. It's part of a much larger investment, with nearly one hundred fifty-five million dollars in road work planned for Fayette County roads like New Circle, Citation Boulevard, Winchester Road, and Georgetown Road. That's significant infrastructure improvement coming our way.
