Barren River Lake State Resort Park gets $9.5M renovation plan
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Barren River Lake State Resort Park will receive $9.5 million in upgrades to enhance visitor experience and attract new travelers as part of a broader statewide investment in Kentucky's park system, according to an announcement from the Kentucky Tourism, Arts & Heritage Cabinet.
The renovation project, beginning in 2026, will direct $6 million toward modernizing the park's lodge. Planned improvements include new finishes, flooring, bathrooms and mini refrigerators in guest rooms, along with updates to the lodge restaurant, lobby and meeting rooms. An additional $3.5 million will fund replacement of HVAC and mechanical systems, including installation of a new chiller to improve guest comfort.
Lodge rooms will close temporarily beginning in February 2026, with renovated accommodations expected to reopen in fall 2026 once construction is complete.
"This investment in Barren River Lake State Resort Park shows our ongoing commitment to providing the best recreational opportunities for Kentuckians and visitors," said Kentucky State Parks Acting Commissioner Mark Kellen.
The Barren River upgrades are part of a larger state initiative to strengthen Kentucky's tourism infrastructure. During the 2024 legislative session, Gov. Andy Beshear signed House Joint Resolution 56, releasing $71 million for capital construction projects across the state parks system, and House Bill 6, allocating more than $66 million for improvements at various state parks.
The park enhancements come as Kentucky's tourism industry continues to show strong growth. State data shows tourism generated $14.3 billion in economic impact in 2024 and supported more than 97,000 jobs, marking the third consecutive record-breaking year for the state's tourism sector.
Kentucky is home to 44 state parks, including 17 resort parks and 13 golf courses, according to state officials.
