OWENSBORO, Ky. — Boulware Mission is expanding its recovery housing and treatment services to meet growing demand for substance use treatment and mental health care in the region, according to reporting from The Lane Report.

The nonprofit expansion includes renovations to residential facilities, additional transitional living capacity and enhancements to clinical services, supported in part by a $50,000 contribution from PMI U.S. The organization served approximately 185 men in 2025.

Boulware Mission, founded in 1921, provides residential treatment combining substance use treatment with mental health services, counseling, recovery housing, case management, education, life skills training and workforce development. The goal is to help participants move from treatment toward employment, stable housing and long-term self-sufficiency.

"At Boulware Mission, our mission is to provide every individual who comes through our doors with the support, resources, and opportunities needed to build a healthier future," Executive Director Shane Sheriff said in a statement. "These investments will allow us to serve more men, expand access to treatment and recovery housing, and strengthen the continuum of care."

The renovation work is underway, with a second-floor bathroom project expected to be completed in September. That effort represents the first phase of a broader initiative involving 17 additional living spaces throughout the transitional living wing.

PMI U.S. has contributed more than $250,000 to Boulware Mission since 2025. Lisa Rechsteiner, director of civil society at PMI U.S., said the company remains committed to supporting the organization's efforts. "Boulware Mission has meaningfully served the Owensboro community for over a century and continues to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families," she said.

The expansion comes as Kentucky's recovery housing infrastructure continues to expand, with the state operating 13 Recovery Kentucky centers across the Commonwealth designed to help individuals recover from substance abuse and address chronic homelessness. Owensboro is home to one of these state-supported facilities.

The improvements are expected to significantly increase the organization's housing capacity and allow more men to transition through treatment into longer-term recovery housing. The expansion also emphasizes workforce development, with programs designed to help participants overcome barriers to employment and achieve financial independence.
