Bryan Station High wins Bradley Award for 'Sweeney Todd' production
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Bryan Station High School's production of "Sweeney Todd – School Edition" has earned a Behind the Scenes Excellence Award at the 2026 Kentucky Performing Arts Bradley Awards.
The school's cast and crew competed against three dozen schools from Kentucky and Indiana at the awards ceremony held May 31 at the Brown Theatre in Louisville. Bryan Station High School, founded in 1958, is part of the Fayette County Public Schools system in Lexington.
The Behind the Scenes Excellence Award recognizes the technical and design contributions that bring theatrical productions to life. Fayette County Public Schools highlighted five students for their exceptional work: Sofia Martinez and Daniel Amaral in assistant student directing, Taylor Glass in hair and makeup design, Sophie Stokley in stage management, and Sydney Jeffries in graphic design, costume and set design.
"These students are led by teacher and director Kala Cookendorfer Chaffin," the school district said in recognizing the team effort.
"Sweeney Todd – School Edition" is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical designed specifically for high school performers. The production tells the story of an exiled barber who returns to 19th-century London seeking vengeance.
The Bradley Awards represent an official regional program of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as The Jimmy Awards. Top honorees in acting categories advance to the national Jimmy Awards in New York City for a week of coaching, master classes and rehearsals culminating in a Broadway ceremony.
