WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands is accepting applications for its inaugural class of an Occupational Therapy Doctorate program, expanding the Williamsburg-based university's graduate health care education offerings as Kentucky continues developing programs to strengthen its health care workforce.

The new entry-level doctorate is designed to prepare occupational therapists to work with diverse populations and help patients improve their ability to participate in daily activities. Applications remain open through April 2027, with the first cohort scheduled to begin classes later that year. The program was initially announced in June.

The doctorate spans nine semesters and requires students to complete 120 credit hours. The curriculum emphasizes preparing client-centered, evidence-informed and occupation-focused practitioners while developing graduates for leadership and scholarly roles within occupational therapy. The university said the program will also emphasize preparation for licensure examinations, professional development and student wellness.

Eligibility requirements include completing at least 90 undergraduate credit hours or holding a bachelor's degree or higher. The program offers both accelerated and traditional academic pathways designed to reduce tuition costs while maintaining the rigor of doctoral-level education.

University of the Cumberlands is joining other Kentucky institutions in expanding occupational therapy education. Eastern Kentucky University, Northern Kentucky University, and Murray State University also operate occupational therapy programs. The addition aligns with efforts across Kentucky to address health care staffing needs, particularly in rural communities.
