Derby winner Golden Tempo preps at Keeneland for Belmont Stakes
Golden Tempo completed a final workout at Keeneland on Saturday in preparation for the Belmont Stakes scheduled for June 6 at Saratoga Race Course.
According to Keeneland, the Kentucky Derby winner worked 4 furlongs on a fast track in 48.20 seconds under jockey Jose Ortiz for trainer Cherie DeVaux. Golden Tempo produced fractions of 23.80, 36, 48.20 and out five-eighths in 1:01 and three-quarters in 1:14.80. The colt is expected to depart for New York on Sunday afternoon.
Golden Tempo made history on May 2 when trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner. The 23-1 longshot rallied from last place to defeat favorite Renegade by a neck in the $5 million race at Churchill Downs, earning $3.1 million for connections Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable.
A son of Hall of Famer Curlin, Golden Tempo has won three races in five starts and earned $3.433 million. He won the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds in January before finishing third in both the Risen Star and Louisiana Derby. This was the colt's fourth training session at Keeneland, where he prepared for the Derby with weekly timed works.
The 2026 Belmont Stakes will run on June 6 at 7:04 p.m. ET at Saratoga Race Course, marking the third and final year the race will be held there due to ongoing reconstruction of Belmont Park. Post positions will be drawn Monday, June 1 at 5 p.m.
