LEXINGTON, Ky. — Dangerously high temperatures have prompted Lexington emergency officials to activate Phase 3 of the city's heat response plan, the highest level of alert for extreme heat conditions, WUKY 91.3 FM reported.

The activation of Phase 3 represents the city's most aggressive response to heat-related emergencies and signals that conditions have reached a critical threshold. Phase 3 typically triggers enhanced emergency services, expanded cooling center operations, and additional outreach to vulnerable populations during extreme heat events.

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's tiered heat response system is designed to provide graduated interventions based on temperature forecasts and actual conditions. Lower phases involve increased monitoring and public communication, while Phase 3 mobilizes additional resources to protect residents from heat-related illness and death.

Extreme heat poses particular risks to elderly residents, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those without adequate air conditioning. Lexington typically opens cooling centers during high-heat alerts to provide residents access to climate-controlled facilities.

The activation of Phase 3 comes as much of the nation has experienced unseasonable heat. Officials urged residents to take precautions including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat hours, checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives, and utilizing community cooling resources.
