LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette Alliance announced its 2025 Mid-Year Appeal to fund its flagship educational program, Grow Smart Academy, as the nonprofit marks the program's 15th anniversary this year.

Fayette Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to achieving sustainable and equitable growth in Lexington-Fayette County, launched Grow Smart Academy in 2010 to provide free education on land-use planning and its relationship to economic development, environmental protection, and quality of life. The program has educated hundreds of Lexington residents on topics ranging from walkability and transportation to housing affordability, greenspaces, and climate policy.

According to the organization, Grow Smart Academy has become one of Lexington's most trusted civic education programs, rooted in data and focused on empowering everyday citizens to engage in local decisions. The program features expert-led sessions, hands-on learning, and nationally recognized keynote speakers designed to equip graduates with tools to advocate for smart growth in their communities.

"In today's political landscape, local decisions matter more than ever—from zoning and housing policy to infrastructure, environmental planning, and farmland protection," the organization stated. "Yet many of these critical choices are made by a small number of elected officials and advisory bodies."

The organization noted that Grow Smart Academy is completely free and open to anyone interested in learning more about how land use impacts livelihood in Lexington. Because of donor support and community sponsorship, the program remains accessible to all residents.

Fayette Alliance, formed in 2006 as Lexington's first and only land-use advocacy group, also conducts advocacy and research to support smart growth initiatives. The organization advocates at City Hall to positively impact planning and zoning laws, promotes community-driven investment, and works to protect Lexington's farmland and agricultural industry.

The organization is seeking donations through its mid-year appeal to expand the reach of Grow Smart Academy and amplify community voices in shaping Lexington's future development.
