LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools will launch a pilot program next school year testing a new locally designed accountability model that redefines how the district measures success beyond traditional standardized testing, Acting Superintendent Bill Bradford announced at the school board's July 20 meeting.

The framework emphasizes community-driven priorities developed with input from business leaders, families and other stakeholders. Bradford said the new approach shifts focus from state-mandated metrics to what genuinely matters to the Fayette County community. "We were invited to completely redefine what was traditionally known as assessment and accountability," he said during the meeting, which was recorded and posted online.

The pilot framework centers on five key areas: active and vibrant learning experiences, family and community partnerships, future readiness, global perspective and inclusivity, and student ownership. District instructional specialist Aaron Davis, a member of the guiding coalition, said the initiative moves aspirational goals into practical classroom application. "We're getting that Portrait of a Graduate off the poster and into the classroom," Davis said.

The 2026-27 pilot phase will test key components, gather feedback, identify challenges and refine processes before broader implementation. The full presentation is available on the district's website.

The new accountability model comes as FCPS navigates a period of significant change. Bradford assumed the interim superintendent role in June following the administrative leave of former superintendent Demetrus Liggins. The district has also undergone external audits and implemented staffing cuts to address financial challenges. School classes are scheduled to begin August 12.
