Foundation distributes $15K in aid after Charles Young Park shooting
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation announced on August 21 that it has distributed $15,126.34 in emergency assistance to people affected by the August 15 shooting at Charles Young Park, according to a statement from the organization.
A 16-year-old was killed and four others were wounded in the shooting during a community event in downtown Lexington. The foundation said in a release that it received 213 emergency assistance inquiries and fielded more than 96 event-related calls since launching its response.
The foundation said assistance was distributed for rent, medical expenses, counseling and utilities, along with referrals to mental health services and crisis support. The organization said that more than 65 percent of completed assistance requests reviewed to date resulted in approved assistance.
Daniel Chapin, founder and national director of the foundation, said in the statement that he personally helped distribute assistance. "There is a difference between reading an application and actually talking with people who were there, hearing what they went through and being able to tell someone that we could help," Chapin said.
The foundation announced that direct financial assistance funds are temporarily paused as of August 21, though its 24-hour crisis support line at (254) 499-8027 remains active. The organization said pending requests will be reconsidered if additional funding becomes available.
The foundation said approximately 99 percent of the emergency funds came from a $15,000 contribution by a private foundation benefactor in Texas. Additional funds came from other charitable sources, including proceeds from a car wash fundraiser in Dallas.
The foundation recognized local nonprofit S.W.A.G. for helping connect individuals to assistance. The organization said it will continue seeking additional funding and coordinating with local partners on recovery efforts.
