Free summer meals available for Fayette County children
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools is offering free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and younger throughout the summer through the USDA's SUN Meals program, with no registration, paperwork or sign-up required.
The program, formally known as the Summer Food Service Program, helps ensure children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is out. Multiple organizations including Fayette County Public Schools, God's Pantry Food Bank and FoodChain are providing meals at 16 different locations across Lexington, including community centers, parks and daycares.
FCPS will serve lunches weekdays from June 8 through July 24 at four library branches: Tates Creek Library, Northside Library, Marksbury Family Library and Eastside Library. Meals must be eaten on-site. The district will be closed June 19 in observance of Juneteenth and July 3 for Independence Day.
Families can use the USDA's Summer Meals Site Finder to locate nearby meal sites and hours. Alternatively, families can text "Food" or "SFSP" to 914-342-7744 or call 866-348-6479 for English or 877-842-6273 for Spanish to find participating locations.
FoodChain, which operates several local sites, focuses on providing hot meals, sandwiches and wraps that include at least one fruit from a Kentucky farmer per week. For questions about FCPS meal sites, families can call the district's Child Nutrition staff at 859-422-2156.
The program also complements Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer funds, which provide $120 per child for eligible households to purchase groceries.
