LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools is seeking high school students to join the Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council for the 2026-27 school year, with applications due Saturday, Sept. 12.

BYSC is a student-led, project-based coalition that brings together environmentally focused student leaders from public and private high schools across Lexington to work with community, business and civic leaders on sustainability initiatives. Members choose from several project committees focused on areas including solid waste management, energy efficiency, sustainable commerce, urban trees and parks and recreation.

The organization has a track record of tangible environmental projects across the district. Over more than 15 years, BYSC has installed water bottle refilling stations in member schools, installed solar benches on campuses, planted trees, conducted energy audits and installed dual-stream recycling receptacles at athletic fields.

The council meets monthly as a full group and conducts project committee meetings every two weeks, providing students with leadership experience and exposure to environmental careers. No prior experience is required, and students from all grade levels are encouraged to apply.

The timing of the recruitment comes as FCPS faces sustainability challenges of its own. In May, the district announced cuts to its sustainability team due to budget shortfalls, affecting the two district staff members who support BYSC's work. However, district officials pledged to continue supporting the council's efforts moving forward.
