Members of the Kentucky Department of Education's Commissioner's Student Advisory Council voted to launch a year-long initiative to expand student involvement in local school board decisions during a meeting on Aug. 25, according to Kentucky Teacher.

The council, which includes high school students in grades 10-12 who advise the state education commissioner on issues affecting Kentucky students, reviewed potential projects at its first meeting of the school year. The initiative will explore ways to make student representation more meaningful in schools and districts across the state.

Commissioner of Education Robbie Fletcher will receive the council's recommendations by spring 2027. The project comes as Kentucky continues efforts to expand student voice in school governance. Legislation passed in recent years has secured permanent student representation on the Kentucky Board of Education, and approximately 70 students applied for positions on the council's 2026-2027 slate.

According to education policy advocates, as of 2022, only 15 of Kentucky's 189 school districts had student representatives on their boards, though studies indicate broader support for the practice among districts surveyed.
