Gov. Andy Beshear has announced that 16 Kentucky literary artists will receive a combined $42,000 in grant funding from the Kentucky Arts Council, the state agency responsible for supporting the arts throughout the commonwealth.

The funds will be distributed through the council's Individual Artist Fellowship and Emerging Artist Award programs, which support literary arts including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and play/screenwriting. The announcement reflects the Beshear administration's commitment to nurturing creative talent across Kentucky.

The Individual Artist Fellowship, a highly competitive $7,500 award, targets working professional Kentucky artists who have demonstrated high levels of excellence and significant achievement in their fields. The Emerging Artist Award of $1,000 is designed for early-career professionals, typically within their first decade of professional artistic practice, who show promise and creativity in their work.

"The arts are essential to Kentucky, our people and our future," Beshear said in a previous statement about state arts funding. "Not only do they inspire, they help make our New Kentucky Home a more welcoming place for families and businesses."

Both fellowship and award funds are unrestricted, allowing recipients to use them in any way to advance their careers. The Kentucky Arts Council, part of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, is publicly funded by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
