Kentucky State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in Johnson County
Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in Johnson County after a man fleeing from police allegedly became combative during an altercation.
According to KSP, a Paintsville Police Department officer was patrolling on foot around 2 a.m. when he spotted a parked motorcycle on Main Street that matched the description of a reported stolen vehicle. When the officer encountered a 37-year-old man from Salyersville at the scene, the man allegedly fled on foot.
After the officer caught up to the suspect, an altercation ensued. A second Paintsville officer responded to assist, and both officers attempted to use tasers to gain control of the man, according to KSP. When the tasers proved ineffective, both officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.
The 37-year-old was transported to a hospital in Pikeville, where he is listed in stable condition. Officers recovered a knife and a firearm at the scene.
KSP did not disclose whether the suspect was armed at the time of the shooting or provide additional details about the nature of the altercation. The investigation remains ongoing, with state police leading the inquiry into the incident, a standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in Kentucky.
