Kentucky University Ranked No. 2 for Affordable Online Doctoral Programs
University of the Cumberlands earned national recognition for offering some of the country's most affordable online doctoral education, positioning itself as an accessible option for working professionals seeking advanced degrees. According to The Lane Report, the Williamsburg-based institution was ranked No. 2 nationally for the most affordable online PhD and doctoral programs in 2026 by Learn.org, an education and career resource.
The ranking highlights the university's combination of tuition costs, online accessibility and flexibility for students balancing graduate education with careers and family responsibilities. Cumberlands offers graduate programs averaging $355 per credit hour, a price point designed to make advanced degrees more accessible to working professionals. The university also provides its "One Price Promise," a tuition model that includes books in the comprehensive cost.
Learn.org evaluated institutions using data from the U.S. Department of Education and National Center for Education Statistics, considering factors including accreditation, affordability, financial aid, online availability and student outcomes. Jack Todd, outreach director for Learn.org, said the ranking highlights the university's commitment to accessibility. "For many working professionals, the primary barrier to the highest level of academic achievement isn't talent — it's cost and flexibility," Todd said.
The Williamsburg institution has structured many of its online courses in shorter bi-term formats to provide greater flexibility for students managing academic workloads alongside other responsibilities. The university's doctoral offerings include programs in business administration, educational leadership, and information technology, among others, all delivered through asynchronous and flexible online formats.
Braden Sevier, an Ed.D. student from Corbin, said the online structure has allowed him to continue his education while balancing two jobs and a family. "This is my third degree from Cumberlands. All have been asynchronous and therefore easily accessible for myself with two jobs and a family," Sevier said.
The recognition comes as online graduate education continues to give Kentucky colleges and universities opportunities to compete for students nationally. Unlike traditional campus-based graduate programs, online doctoral degrees can attract professionals who want to advance their education without relocating or leaving their careers. The combination of cost, flexibility and academic credentials has become increasingly important as institutions compete for graduate enrollment.
