LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council approved the Fiscal Year 2027 budget on June 9, concluding weeks of deliberation and allocating nearly $300 million toward public safety while investing heavily in infrastructure and community services.

Mayor Linda Gorton, who proposed the $546 million budget in April, saw the council largely adopt her original spending plan while adding more than $2 million in amendments during May meetings. "Today, the Council has approved a responsible, responsive, and balanced budget," said James Brown, chair of the Budget, Finance & Economic Development Committee.

The final budget reflects Lexington's recent infrastructure challenges and public safety priorities. The budget includes $5.1 million to battle snow and ice, a significant increase following the city's criticism after multiple winter storms earlier in 2026. An additional $1 million is designated for winter weather preparedness.

Public safety divisions received nearly $300 million, including $2.6 million for police technologies and $1.5 million to replace heavy equipment for the Fire Department. The budget also expands mental health resources for public safety professionals and supports the Police Activities League.

Street infrastructure will receive substantial support, with $13 million allocated for street paving and maintenance, a new $200,000 pothole repair fund, and $400,000 to help residents repair unsafe sidewalks. Parks will receive $7.5 million for capital projects and $1.26 million for basic maintenance, including support for a new Senior & Therapeutic Recreation Center at Shillito Park.

The budget prioritizes housing assistance with $5 million invested in the Affordable Housing Fund, $2.2 million for winter warming operations, and $1.66 million for homelessness prevention and intervention. Additionally, $4.9 million will support local nonprofits through community services programs.

The budget also funds accessibility improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, security enhancements at the Government Center, and $2.7 million for economic development initiatives.
