LEXINGTON, Ky. — Mayor Linda Gorton signed a proclamation honoring members of the Lexington Fire Department and emergency medical services for their bravery and commitment to community safety, marking International Firefighters Day.

The recognition, reported by WUKY 91.3 FM, highlights the contributions of the city's firefighters and EMS personnel who respond to emergencies across Fayette County.

International Firefighters Day, observed annually on May 4, commemorates firefighters worldwide and recognizes the sacrifices made by those in the profession. The day also honors the memory of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Gorton's proclamation underscores the critical role that first responders play in protecting Lexington residents and maintaining public safety. The City of Lexington Fire Department operates multiple stations throughout the city and responds to structural fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and other incidents requiring emergency intervention.

The recognition comes as communities nationwide acknowledge the contributions of fire service professionals. The Lexington Fire Department, established in 1882, has grown to serve a population of more than 320,000 residents in the greater Lexington area.

Firefighters and EMS workers face significant occupational hazards while performing their duties, including exposure to hazardous materials, extreme heat, and dangerous structural conditions. Their work also extends to community education about fire safety, prevention, and emergency preparedness.
