Lexington hosts World Cup watch party as USA prepares for Belgium knockout match
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The City of Lexington announced plans for a free community watch party as the U.S. Men's National Team prepares to face Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, according to a statement from Mayor Linda Gorton's office.
The event will take place at 8 p.m. Monday, July 6, at the historic Kentucky Theatre on East Main Street, with doors opening at 7 p.m. More than 800 seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The watch party builds on the momentum from a previous gathering where residents cheered Team USA to advance from the group stage.
"What a win, and what a night," Gorton said in the statement. "Lexington showed up to cheer on the red, white, and blue, and we're excited to do it all again. We hope everyone will join us Monday evening as Team USA continues its incredible World Cup run!"
The U.S. advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, securing the team's fourth round of 16 appearance in as many tries. The Belgium match will take place at 8 p.m. ET at Seattle's Lumen Field.
The City is partnering with FOX 56, the Kentucky Theatre and the Lexington Sporting Club to host the watch party. David Simms, Director of Marketing for Lexington Sporting Club, said the organization is excited to expand capacity for Monday's event. "Soccer fever is in full swing, and we're excited to run it back with an expanded capacity when we take to Belgium," Simms said in the statement.
The Lexington Sporting Club will sell USA-themed merchandise and offer fans a free photo opportunity with a championship trophy.
