Man convicted in officer's death arrested in stabbing, robbery
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A man previously convicted of killing a Lexington police officer has been arrested and charged in connection with a stabbing and robbery, prompting emotional responses from department leadership.
Glenn Doneghy, 49, was arrested April 7 and charged with Assault 1st Degree and Robbery 2nd Degree. Officers responded to the 700 block of North Broadway around 11 p.m. on March 29 after a victim was stabbed. Investigators learned the victim left a nearby gas station and was followed by Doneghy before the two got into a verbal confrontation and Doneghy allegedly brandished a knife. The victim was stabbed in the area of W Seventh Street and Elsmere Alley and was transported to a local hospital with reported non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Doneghy stabbed someone on March 29 and robbed a Speedway that same day, followed by another robbery he allegedly carried out at the Speedway on April 2. After days of searching, Doneghy was detained April 3 but formally charged April 7. He is currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.
The arrest carries significant weight for the Lexington Police Department. Doneghy was convicted in the 2010 hit-and-run death of Officer Bryan Durman but was released from jail in 2019 on mandatory re-entry supervision. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said the situation has brought back difficult emotions for the department. Weathers said he and other officers remember working alongside Durman, so seeing Doneghy's name again has been hard.
Doneghy will be back in court for a preliminary hearing April 14. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
