Gov. Andy Beshear joined former Gov. Steve Beshear and state and federal officials to celebrate the completion of an 11-mile widening project in Wolfe County, marking a significant milestone for the Mountain Parkway Expansion. The ribbon-cutting ceremony recognized the completion of five widening segments totaling 32 continuous miles of four-lane highway between Campton and Salyersville, one of Eastern Kentucky's most important infrastructure projects.

The Wolfe County segment, a nearly $100 million undertaking that began construction in 2022, extended from mile point 45.8 near Campton to just west of Helechawa. The project included reconstruction of two interchanges at Kentucky Highway 191 in Campton and Kentucky Highway 1010 at Hazel Green. The work was supported by a $55 million federal Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant secured in 2020.

State and regional leaders have long viewed the Mountain Parkway Expansion as one of Kentucky's most important economic development infrastructure projects. The expanded corridor provides Eastern Kentucky with better access to major employment centers and strengthens the region's ability to compete for industrial investment. "This took a tremendous amount of work, and the end result means we have taken another step forward in making it safer, easier and faster for families to live, learn, work and connect across Eastern Kentucky," Beshear said.

With the Wolfe County widening now complete, construction focus shifts to the final and most ambitious segment: a 13-mile stretch of entirely new four-lane highway through Magoffin and Floyd counties. Construction on the Magoffin-Floyd segment began in 2025 and is expected to continue through 2032. The project will require moving approximately 30 million cubic yards of earth, making it one of the largest excavation projects in Kentucky history. Once completed, the Mountain Parkway Expansion will create a continuous 400-mile four-lane corridor from Pikeville to Paducah, closing what transportation officials describe as the only remaining gap in a high-speed highway network serving Central Appalachia.
