A new master-planned community in Lee County is now welcoming its first homebuyers as eastern Kentucky taps into surging outdoor tourism. Lazenby Preserve announced on June 18 that it is offering initial private home sites to the public, positioned just minutes from Slade and the region's renowned natural attractions.

The development reflects a national trend toward outdoor-focused living, combining private home ownership with preserved land and recreational access. According to a press release, approximately 1,800 acres within the community will be set aside for recreational use, including hiking, trail riding, and wildlife viewing. Rather than emphasizing density, the development prioritizes open space and environmental stewardship.

Virginia "Gigi" Lazenby, who founded the preserve, said the vision is "to create a place where people can slow down, enjoy the land, and feel connected to the outdoors." The project includes opportunities for weekend retreats, second homes, and investment properties, with designated areas for RV and tent camping kept separate from residential zones to protect community character.

The initial phase, called Zachariah Landing, offers smaller home sites suited for efficient, low-impact construction. Future phases will feature gated sections with larger parcels and custom-built homes designed to capitalize on the region's terrain and scenic views.

Lee County, located in the Eastern Coal Field region, has faced economic challenges in recent decades as coal mining declined. The county's population has remained relatively flat, hovering near 7,400 as of 2020. The Lazenby Preserve project emerges as Red River Gorge continues to attract visitors, with the area now a major outdoor recreation destination featuring hiking, rock climbing, and river activities.
