No. 3 Kentucky volleyball opens season with sweep of No. 6 Wisconsin
No. 3 Kentucky volleyball opened its 2026 season with an emphatic statement Friday, defeating No. 6 Wisconsin 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18) at the AVCA First Serve tournament in Milwaukee.
The Wildcats recorded 43 kills with just eight errors for a .380 hitting percentage, establishing control throughout the match. Brooklyn DeLeye led Kentucky with 12 kills while Morgan Gaerte added 10, continuing the dynamic outside duo that coach Craig Skinner has built for the defending national runners-up.
Lizzie Carr was the match's leading performer with eight kills on 14 swings for a .571 hitting percentage, while setter Kassie O'Brien orchestrated the offense with 33 assists. The trio of O'Brien, Carr and Gaerte combined for 12 blocks, helping Kentucky double Wisconsin's blocking total of five.
Defensively, libero Molly Tuozzo recorded a team-high 12 digs, limiting Wisconsin to a .186 team hitting percentage. Friday's win sets up a significant matchup for Kentucky, which will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The victory comes as part of an inaugural showcase of elite programs opening the 2026 season. Wisconsin and Kentucky are rematch opponents from the 2025 national semifinal, which the Wildcats won 3-2 in dramatic fashion. The Wildcats received four first-place votes in the preseason AVCA poll, the second-most behind Nebraska.
