Northern Kentucky Health Department launches vape disposal program to address youth vaping

More than 300 schools across Northern Kentucky now have locked collection boxes where students and staff can safely turn in confiscated vaping devices, Katie Amrhein reports for WKRC-TV, based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The “Ditch Vapes” initiative was launched by the Northern Kentucky Health Department after school officials asked for guidance on how to properly dispose of the products, Amrhein reports.
“The program is now operating in 30 schools throughout the region and is one of only four vape disposal plans in the country,” Amrhein writes.
Northern Kentucky Health Department Substance Use Prevention Health Educator Casey Baker-Romans told Amrhein that parents should not assume their children are not vaping and should have ongoing discussions about this topic.
Further, she noted that many teens continue to believe that vaping is safer than smoking traditional cigarettes, even though they can still lead to respiratory illnesses and nicotine addiction.
