There's something about standing at the top of High Street at three in the morning that makes you feel like you're holding vigil for the whole city. Below, downtown Lexington sleeps in gentle darkness, but the courthouse glows like a patient lighthouse, its windows catching whatever moonlight filters through the Kentucky sky.

This is the hour when the city belongs to different creatures. Night shift nurses heading home from Saint Joseph. A few delivery trucks rumbling down Broadway, their headlights sweeping across empty intersections. Maybe a cardinal or mockingbird testing a few notes from the old trees that line these streets, trees that have watched this town grow from frontier settlement to something larger and more complex, yet still small enough to know itself.

The courthouse lights never dim. There's comfort in that constancy, the way they cast their steady glow across the plaza where farmers once sold tobacco and horses, where children now play on summer afternoons, where protesters and celebrants and ordinary people living ordinary lives have gathered for more than two centuries. Tonight, though, it's just the light and the quiet and the sense that somewhere in the darkness, other people are awake too, thinking their own thoughts, listening to their own night sounds.

From up here, you can almost see the edges of the Bluegrass rolling away in all directions, the horse farms and bourbon distilleries and small towns that make this corner of Kentucky what it is. But mostly you see the peaceful sleep of a place that trusts tomorrow will come, as it always has, with its own particular light.
