LEXINGTON, Ky. — In his coaching debut, Will Stein led the Kentucky Wildcats to a 45-13 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday at Kroger Field, putting his offseason preparation to immediate use. The Wildcats' dominant performance showcased the offense's firepower and defensive discipline as Stein, the former Oregon offensive coordinator hired away from an 11-1 Ducks team, got his tenure off to a promising start.

Kentucky's offense accumulated 506 total yards, with quarterback Kenny Minchey delivering an efficient performance in his first career start. Minchey, a transfer from Notre Dame, completed 18 of 27 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns. Stein acknowledged both the strengths and areas needing refinement. "For his first start, I was very pleased with his performance," Stein said, noting that Minchey "forced the ball down the field a little" but demonstrated poise in escaping defenders. The Wildcats' ground game proved equally effective, gaining 205 yards on 34 carries for an average of six yards per attempt, with running back Jason Patterson contributing 78 yards.

Freshman receiver Kenny Darby made an immediate impact, catching three passes for 74 yards and his first career touchdown. "That guy can play football. You can just see it," Stein said. "He's explosive and he's playing really well, and so we want to keep feeding him."

Defensively, Kentucky limited Youngstown State's mobile quarterback Beau Brungard to just 59 yards on 28 rushing attempts. Stein emphasized the defensive performance's importance: "For the most part, we stopped (Brungard) from running the ball, which was a big part of the plan." While acknowledging penalties and other corrections needed, Stein projected confidence about the team's direction. "There wasn't a ton of penalties, but there's still a lot of stuff we've got to fix," he said. "I am not mad at all. I'm just ready to keep rocking."
