This Day in Lexington
This day in Lexington, May nine, the history books might be quiet, but the city itself is anything but. We're right in the heart of spring's grand finale, when Lexington puts on one of its finest shows of the year.
Walk through any neighborhood right now and you'll catch the last of the dogwood blossoms giving way to the emerging green canopy that'll shade us through summer. The redbud trees that painted the town pink just weeks ago are now thick with heart-shaped leaves. Down at the Arboretum, the late tulips are making their final stand while the peonies get ready for their moment.
This is derby season, of course, and even though the roses have been awarded down in Louisville, the excitement lingers in horse country. Keeneland wrapped up its spring meet just last month, but the morning workouts continue, and if you know where to look, you can still catch that magic hour when the mist rises off the track and the thoroughbreds stretch their legs in the cool morning air.
The farmers markets are hitting their stride too, with early tomatoes and the first sweet corn starting to appear alongside the spring greens that have sustained us through April.
That's your history for today.
