This Day in Lexington
This day in Lexington history, on May tenth, eighteen sixty-five, one of the Civil War's most notorious figures met his end right here in Kentucky. William Quantrill, the Confederate raider whose guerrilla tactics terrorized Union supporters across Missouri and Kansas, was finally cornered by Union soldiers in our state. They ambushed him, leaving him mortally wounded. Quantrill would linger for nearly a month before dying in early June, but his reign of terror effectively ended here in Kentucky.
Quantrill wasn't your typical Confederate officer. He led a band of irregular fighters who operated more like outlaws than soldiers, launching surprise attacks on Union towns and military posts. His most infamous raid destroyed Lawrence, Kansas, killing nearly two hundred civilians. By the time Union forces tracked him to Kentucky, he'd become one of the war's most wanted men. It's fitting that his violent career came to an end in the Bluegrass State, as Kentucky itself had been torn between Union and Confederate loyalties throughout the conflict. The ambush marked the closing chapter of one of the war's darkest stories.
That's your history for today.
