This Day in Lexington
This day in Lexington history, on May 20, we're looking back to the Civil War era when Kentucky faced one of the biggest decisions in the state's past. Back in eighteen sixty-one, right here at the start of the war, Kentucky made an official proclamation of neutrality. It was a bold move, really. While the nation tore itself apart over slavery and secession, Kentucky tried to walk a middle line, hoping to stay out of the conflict altogether. But that peace wouldn't last long. By early September of that same year, Confederate forces crossed into Kentucky, and the state's careful neutrality crumbled. That moment marked the end of Kentucky's attempt to stay on the sidelines and the beginning of a long, difficult chapter when Kentuckians found themselves divided, with neighbors fighting neighbors. It's a reminder of just how much the Civil War tested this commonwealth, and how complicated loyalty and choice became for people right here in Lexington. That's your history for today.
