LEXINGTON, Ky. — Transylvania University continues to expand opportunities for students to study abroad during its four-week May term, emphasizing accessibility and affordability for all majors.

During the concentrated May term, students focus on a single course while gaining what is often their first taste of international study. Many May term courses are team-taught and highly interdisciplinary, allowing students to combine classroom learning with on-site experiences. Recent offerings have included courses in Hawaii focused on geological and biological evolution, service projects in the Philippines addressing public health concerns, and art and culture studies in China with visits to museums and archaeological sites.

The university makes May term travel financially accessible through multiple scholarship opportunities. Students can apply for May term scholarships with an October 18 deadline, and specific endowed grants are available for art and art history majors. Beyond traditional scholarships, the Office of Global and Intercultural Engagement offers free passport photos for students and provides personalized guidance to help students find or design appropriate study abroad experiences.

Rachel Wilson, director of global and intercultural engagement, has emphasized that the university's unique May term structure serves as a "competitive advantage" in offering a diverse portfolio of courses and destinations. The university has also launched grant-funded initiatives to provide free passports to first-year students and design international opportunities targeted to pre-health students, who have historically had lower participation rates in study abroad.

The university encourages all students to plan to travel during May term at least once during their time at Transylvania, with the goal of making studying abroad possible regardless of background, finances, major or previous travel experience.
