A collision on Interstate 75 in Scott County on Saturday left two people dead and three firefighters injured after a vehicle lost control and struck a fire engine responding to an earlier crash, according to the Kentucky State Police.

The crash occurred at 3:01 p.m. on July 11 near the 142-mile marker on I-75 southbound, when a Scott County Fire Department truck providing traffic control for an unrelated collision was hit by another vehicle. The fire truck's emergency lights were activated at the time.

Two occupants of the passenger vehicle—Darren Paul Nelson, 61, and Shauna Colleen Nelson, 62, both of Knoxville, Tennessee—were pronounced dead at the scene by the Scott County Coroner. Two other occupants of the vehicle were transported to UK Hospital with serious injuries. Three firefighters from the Scott County Fire Department were taken to Centerpoint Health Hospital in Georgetown for treatment and later released.

According to witness accounts, conditions at the scene included rain and slick roads. The victims were traveling home to Tennessee when the incident occurred.

The collision remains under investigation by Sgt. Jack Hedges of the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), with assistance from Scott County emergency services. The incident caused significant traffic disruptions, with southbound lanes closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the roadway.
