LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky earned recognition from the U.S. Navy Reserve as a civilian employer that provides outstanding support to military personnel balancing dual careers, the university announced this week based on a report from UK News.

UK was among approximately 60 employers nationwide honored during the Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) 2026 on June 11 in San Diego. The annual event recognizes civilian employers who provide outstanding support to Reserve Sailors in their organizations.

Yixin Luo, an associate research engineer at the UK Center for Applied Energy Research and Navy reservist, nominated the university for the recognition. CAER, which has been Kentucky's energy research hub for nearly 50 years, demonstrated its commitment to employees serving in the military, Luo said in a statement.

"At CAER and across the university, I've experienced a culture that values both professional excellence and public service," Luo said. "The skills I develop through military service benefit my work at UK, and the university's support enables me to continue serving my country while contributing to research and education here in Kentucky."

Matt Weisenberger, CAER associate director, represented the university at the San Diego event alongside Luo. Attendees toured the USS Anchorage and participated in demonstrations showcasing the Navy Reserve's capabilities and missions.

"The recognition reflects the university's commitment to supporting employees who serve our country while advancing the university's mission," Weisenberger said. "It's an honor to be recognized alongside organizations from across the nation that understand the value and unique contributions of our citizen-sailors."

The event served as a bridge between employers and the military, strengthening partnerships that enable reservists to balance military service with civilian careers.
