LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky will host a free "Stop the Bleed" educational display and demonstration event this month to teach community members how to control life-threatening bleeding in emergency situations.

The event, organized by UK Human Resources Work-Life, Safe Kids Fayette County and Golisano Children's at UK, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29 on the second floor atrium of the Gatton Student Center. According to Azetta Beatty, HR Work-Life benefits manager, uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma, and simple techniques demonstrated at the event can make the difference between life and death.

Severe bleeding can result in death within minutes before paramedics arrive at the scene. Research shows that bystanders with little or no medical training can save lives during emergencies by applying wound compression techniques after traumatic injuries, which improves survival chances for trauma victims.

The Stop the Bleed initiative aims to raise public awareness about basic actions that can stop life-threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and human-made and natural disasters. The event is open to everyone in the UK community, with special benefits for caregivers of children and aging loved ones.
