TULSA, Okla. — University of Kentucky tennis player Mikael Arseneault won his opening match Monday at the ITA All-American Championship, defeating Arizona State's Jelani Sarr in a tight three-set contest to advance in singles open qualifying at college tennis's premier fall event.

Arseneault, a second-year Wildcat, dropped the opening set 6-4 before rebounding to win the next two sets, both by a single break at 6-3 and 6-4, completing the match in just over an hour. He will face Tulsa's Nikita Volonski on Tuesday, who also won Monday in straight sets against No. 4 seed Zoran Lidoski of Arizona, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3.

Two other Kentucky players competing in the pre-qualifying rounds also advanced Monday. Newcomers Rafael Ymer and Tom Sickenberger both posted victories to move into the next round of the back-draw matches. Both are scheduled to play Tuesday afternoon.

The main draw competition, featuring UK standouts Nicholas Arseneault, Jack Loutit and Eli Stephenson, begins Wednesday afternoon. The order of play for those matches will be announced Tuesday evening.
