Video contradicts official account of Central High arrest
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting analysis reveals significant discrepancies between what Jefferson County Public Schools officials initially reported and what body camera footage shows from the arrest of a man at Central High School in March.
WDRB reporter Adi Schanie's investigation found that school administrators' account of the March 4 incident contradicts the officer's own body camera recording. The district initially told families that a suspicious male was arrested at gunpoint "outside our campus," but video evidence shows the arrest occurred inside the school's security checkpoint area.
According to the body camera footage, Derrick Mosley, 33, was buzzed into the locked school doors by office staff before the officer encountered him. Mosley identifies himself as a parent and claims his daughter attends the school, though he does not appear in the district's parent records.
The arrest citation states that Mosley "ran past" the officer, but the video shows he walked ahead through the doors after being buzzed in. Police officers drew their weapons because they could not determine whether he was armed. Mosley was charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct and has pleaded not guilty.
The March 4 encounter prompted a brief lockdown at the school. JCPS says it is now reviewing the school's buzzer entry process following the incident.
All 72 JCPS police officers wear body cameras. The discrepancy highlights how investigative reporting into body camera footage can reveal gaps between official statements and actual events, particularly when schools send minimal details to families about security incidents.
