WKU Names Derick Strode as Gatton Academy's Third Director
Dr. Derick Strode will return to lead The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University as the program's third director, beginning July 13.
Strode succeeds Dr. Lynette Breedlove, who has directed the academy since 2014. The Gatton Academy, established in 2007, is Kentucky's first residential two-year program for gifted and talented juniors and seniors, allowing high school students to complete their final two years while earning at least 60 college credit hours.
Strode previously served at the academy from 2008 to 2021 as Assistant Director and Coordinator of Research, Internships, and Scholarships, work that helped establish the program's foundational commitment to experiential learning opportunities. Most recently, he directed WKU's Regional Campuses, overseeing a 34 percent enrollment increase over five years and expanding dual credit and early college initiatives across South Central Kentucky.
A four-time WKU graduate holding a Doctor of Education in educational leadership, Strode has also served as an international student advisor and admissions counselor at the university. He has been recognized as an America's Languages Fellow by the American Councils for International Education and a Regeneron Teacher of Merit.
"It is a thrill and honor to be chosen as Gatton's third director," Strode said. "I look forward to leading the wonderful work of the program forward for Kentucky, getting to know the current students, and reconnecting with alumni and program supporters."
WKU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bud Fischer expressed confidence that "Dr. Strode's experience, vision, and dedication will position the Academy for continued excellence and innovation for its next twenty years."
Strode's departure from regional campuses leadership creates a leadership transition. Stephanie Prichard, currently assistant director of regional campuses, will serve as interim director while WKU conducts a search for a permanent replacement.
