Autopsy: Singer D4vd's teen victim died from stab wounds
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A 14-year-old girl whose death is alleged to have been caused by alt-pop singer D4vd died from penetrating stab wounds to her upper body, according to an autopsy report released Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office.
Celeste Rivas Hernandez's death was ruled a homicide. The autopsy revealed two penetrating wounds to her torso with smooth edges consistent with sharp force injuries — one to her upper abdomen that penetrated the liver and another to her left chest that damaged her ribs. A tube top she was wearing appeared to be cut in three places.
The 21-year-old musician, whose legal name is David Burke, was charged Monday with first-degree murder, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and mutilating a dead body. He pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege Burke killed Rivas Hernandez because she threatened to report they had a sexual relationship that began when she was 13 years old and feared it would damage his rising career.
The girl's body was found in September, dismembered and decomposing in two bags in the trunk of a Tesla parked in the Hollywood Hills. The extensive postmortem degradation limited the scope of the autopsy — examiners could not determine her eye color, and several fingers and parts of her limbs were missing.
A judge had ordered the autopsy report sealed late last year at law enforcement's request, but prosecutors agreed this week to its release. Dr. Odey C. Ukpo, LA County's chief medical examiner, expressed frustration with the delay in a statement. "After several months, I am grateful this information can now be released, not only to the public, but also to the grieving family enduring loss," he said.
Rivas Hernandez's parents, Jesus Rivas and Mercedes Martinez of Lake Elsinore, California, made their first public comments Tuesday night. "Celeste was a beautiful, strong girl who loved to sing and dance," they said. "We love her very much and she always told us that she loved us. We miss her deeply. All we want is justice for Celeste."
D4vd, who pronounced his stage name "David," gained popularity on TikTok with the 2022 hit "Romantic Homicide," which peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. His debut album, "Withered," was released one year ago, two days after prosecutors estimate Rivas Hernandez was killed.
