LEXINGTON, Ky. — The city has officially opened two rebuilt sports courts at Belleau Woods Park, completing a project that replaces aging facilities in a neighborhood where residents have long sought recreation improvements.

Mayor Linda Gorton joined councilmembers, Parks & Recreation staff and community members for a ribbon-cutting at the park, located at 3770 Forest Green Drive. The double-striped courts accommodate both tennis and pickleball, maximizing the space and offering neighborhood residents a broader range of recreational options.

"We're excited to be here at Belleau Woods Park to formally open these rebuilt courts," Gorton said. "Double-striped courts like these are ideal for neighborhood parks. They allow people to enjoy a variety of recreation in their neighborhood, while maximizing greenspace."

The rebuilt courts feature new asphalt, fencing and benches. They replace two tennis courts that had deteriorated and needed repair, according to the city.

District 4 Councilmember Emma Curtis, whose district includes the park, said neighborhood residents had expressed enthusiasm for the project. "Belleau Woods Park is a vital community space for my neighbors in the Fourth District, many of whom have dreamed of revitalizing these tennis courts for years," Curtis said. "Now, with the help of our partners in Parks and Recreation, we've been able to make that dream a reality."

The courts are part of a larger expansion of tennis and pickleball facilities across Lexington. Similar double-striped courts are available at Lansdowne-Merrick, Mount Tabor, Meadowthorpe and Southland parks, reflecting the city's effort to meet growing demand for pickleball while maintaining tennis infrastructure.

Chris Cooperrider, Deputy Director of Lexington Parks & Recreation, emphasized the facility's location advantages. "These courts are in a great location in the park – offering easy access from the sidewalk and entrance and beautiful views of the trees, pollinator plants, playground and trail," Cooperrider said.

Belleau Woods Park, a 21-acre neighborhood park, includes playgrounds, walking trails, a creek, and picnic areas. The court improvements add to the park's appeal for families and active adults seeking convenient recreation options.
