Blue Grass Airport launches GoodMaps accessibility navigation
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Blue Grass Airport has launched GoodMaps, an advanced indoor navigation and accessible mapping technology designed to enhance the travel experience for passengers with disabilities during the busy holiday season and beyond.
The app-based service provides barrier-free navigation throughout the terminal using camera-based positioning technology developed by Louisville-based GoodMaps. According to airport officials, passengers can access turn-by-turn directions to airline gates, baggage belts, restrooms, shops and restaurants with audio, visual and step-free guidance available in more than 20 languages.
"This partnership with GoodMaps embodies our commitment to providing a welcoming approach that connects Kentucky and the world for everyone," said Eric Frankl, CEO and President at Blue Grass Airport. "As we continue with our record-breaking growth, we're helping passengers with mobility, visual and hearing needs have a smoother, more comfortable travel experience than ever before."
GoodMaps was born out of the American Printing House for the Blind and founded in Louisville in 2019, addressing a gap in indoor navigation technology. The company's system uses LiDAR and 360-degree cameras to create highly accurate digital maps without requiring hardware installation inside buildings.
Airport officials demonstrated the new service to accessibility advocates, including the American Council of the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind, the Center for Independent Living and the University of Kentucky's Orientation and Mobility program. Passengers can download the app from iOS and Android app stores or access it through the airport's website at www.bluegrassairport.com/accessibility.
The launch comes as Blue Grass Airport set a record in 2025 with 1,614,053 passengers, representing a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year. The airport is undergoing significant infrastructure improvements, including a $17.8 million parking expansion expected to add 815 long-term parking spaces by late spring 2026.
