LEXINGTON, Ky. — A delegation from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington, D.C., visited Lexington to explore educational partnerships and cultural connections between the city and China, according to a news release from Global Lex.

The delegation was led by Minister Tang Zhiwen, who was making his first visit to Lexington. Global Lex, the city's multilingual, multidisciplinary international center, hosted a luncheon bringing together local leaders from higher education and international education sectors.

Attendees included Vice Mayor Dan Wu, Commissioner of Social Services Kacy Allen-Bryant, and senior leaders from the University of Kentucky, Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Asbury University, Berea College, and the Kentucky Association of Chinese Language Teachers.

The discussion focused on strengthening educational partnerships, supporting Chinese language learning, and exploring youth exchange opportunities. Vice Mayor Wu said the visit underscored the importance of local relationships transcending geopolitical tensions. "These relationships are not just about politics but people who want to share their culture and values with each other," Wu said, noting that he practiced his Mandarin with the minister.

The visit reflects Lexington's broader commitment to international engagement. The city maintains four Sister City partnerships and recently established a Friendship Agreement with Jeju City, South Korea. Earlier this year, Global Lex launched a new village feature at the DiverCity Festival designed to celebrate Lexington's international communities and connect residents with organizations serving them.
