Keeneland-based Golden Tempo completed a sharp four-furlong workout in :48.40 on Friday as trainer Cherie DeVaux readies the multiple classic winner for his next test at Saratoga Race Course.

The 3-year-old son of Curlin worked by himself over a fast track at the Keeneland Training Center, producing fractions of :12.80, :24.60, :36.60, :48.40, out five-eighths in 1:01.40 and out three-quarters in 1:14.80. Work rider Ameth Gonzalez was aboard for the drill.

"Beautiful work. First work back since the Belmont (G1)," assistant trainer David Carroll said. "Normally he breezes in company, but he went by himself today and was in hand the whole way. Couldn't ask for more — really happy with what I saw."

Golden Tempo is scheduled to ship to Saratoga on Saturday, July 18, to prepare for the DraftKings Travers, scheduled for Aug. 29. The $1.25 million Grade 1 race is Saratoga's signature event and carries prestige as one of the most important tests for 3-year-olds outside the Triple Crown season.

A homebred for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, Golden Tempo has resided at DeVaux's barn at the Keeneland Training Center since his recent classic victories. The colt won the May 2 Kentucky Derby by a neck in a stunning upset from 23-1 odds, then returned to capture the June 6 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga by 1¼ lengths. Both victories came under jockey Jose Ortiz.

DeVaux made history as the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner and the second to train a Belmont Stakes winner. Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness to focus his campaign on the longer classics.

The colt has posted four wins in six starts and earned $4,633,000 in purses. His workouts and preparation have been closely monitored since a minor illness in late June, but his latest effort showed he is back on form heading into his Saratoga campaign.
