LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools will participate in Kentucky's statewide High Attendance Day on September 9, an initiative designed to emphasize the critical role daily school attendance plays in student success, according to the district's announcement.

The district will recognize its elementary, middle school, and high school with the highest attendance rates on the designated day. The annual observance, organized by Kentucky's Directors of Pupil Personnel, highlights research showing that attendance directly impacts student achievement and long-term educational outcomes.

Chronic absenteeism poses a significant barrier to academic success. Missing just 10 percent of the school year—approximately two days per month—can substantially affect a student's academic progress, according to district officials. Research demonstrates that regular attendance builds habits essential for students to excel in school and succeed in their future endeavors.

Fayette County Public Schools, which serves all of Fayette County and is coextensive with Lexington, encompasses 79 schools and approximately 41,700 students. The district encourages families to prioritize getting children to school on time daily and to maintain consistent attendance throughout the year.

School officials also recommend that parents communicate with school personnel about any barriers or circumstances that may prevent consistent attendance, allowing administrators to provide support and resources.
