Harlan teacher launches GoTeach Scholarship for future educators
Tyler Saylor, an English language arts and Senior Seminar instructor at Harlan High School in the Harlan Independent School District, has launched the GoTeach Scholarship initiative aimed at encouraging and supporting the next generation of Kentucky educators, according to Kentucky Teacher.
Saylor's effort to promote teacher recruitment comes at a time when Kentucky faces persistent challenges in educator hiring and retention. The state offers several pathways to support aspiring teachers, including the Teacher Scholarship Program through the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, which provides up to $6,000 to Kentucky residents pursuing teacher certification at participating colleges.
The GoTeach Scholarship reflects a broader statewide initiative. Saylor serves as a GoTeachKY Ambassador, a program designed to address teacher shortages by cultivating homegrown talent and encouraging young Kentuckians to enter the profession.
Harlan Independent Schools, a high-performing district recognized by U.S. News and World Report for academic excellence, serves approximately 920 students across three schools in Harlan County. The district has emphasized its commitment to hiring passionate educators who demonstrate a growth mindset and dedication to student success.
Saylor's scholarship initiative aligns with state and federal efforts to attract qualified teachers. The Kentucky Teacher Recruitment Loan Program, which offers forgivable loans to students pursuing initial teacher certification, and the federal TEACH Grant Program, which provides up to $4,000 annually, are among the resources available to prospective educators.
