Humane Society launches adoption push during PetSmart week
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Humane Society is ramping up adoption efforts during PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, March 24-30, aiming to place more than 50 animals in homes during the seven-day campaign at the Hamburg Pavilion PetSmart location.
The effort comes as the organization received a $75,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, which will help fund adoption programs throughout 2025. Meghan Hawkins, LHS director of development, said the grant is crucial to the shelter's mission of placing adoptable animals.
"Receiving this $75,000 grant from PetSmart Charities will be instrumental in helping us adopt over 1,200 homeless animals this year through the Everyday Adoption Center," Hawkins said in a statement. "During this National Adoption Week, our goal is to double our average and adopt at least 50."
The Lexington Humane Society typically places about 25 animals per week through its Everyday Adoption Center at the PetSmart location. During the national adoption week, staff and volunteers will work to match prospective pet owners with animals of various ages, breeds, temperaments and energy levels, considering factors like lifestyle and household preferences.
Founded in 1889, the Lexington Humane Society is the largest pet adoption agency in Central Kentucky and relies entirely on private donations, grants and community support with no government funding. The organization also provides education on responsible pet care and operates a low-cost spay and neuter program for qualifying families.
Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities, encouraged the community to visit during the week. "There is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet! Please stop by your neighborhood PetSmart store and meet your new best friend," Marston said. For more information about available pets and adoption procedures, visit adoptlove.net.
