
Frederick Douglass Routs Highlands in Season Opener; Lexington Wins Dominate Friday
Frederick Douglass scored 21 unanswered in the fourth to get payback from last year's season opening loss to the Bluebirds as the Broncos defeated Highlands 41-20 Friday night at home. Douglass ripped off 170 yards in the final frame while the Bluebirds had two costly fumbles in the critical quarter.
Lexington-area schools had a strong Friday night, with several dominant performances across the board. Lexington Christian beat North Hardin 28-7 at home, while Lafayette defeated North Oldham 28-14 at home. Lexington Catholic beat Ballard 19-6 in another home victory. Sayre recorded a close win on the road, defeating Kentucky Country Day 22-19. In soccer, Frederick Douglass' girls team overwhelmed Bullitt East 8-0 at home.
It was a tougher Friday for some programs. Henry Clay fell to Collins 48-6 at home, while Bryan Station lost to South Warren 32-9 at home.
Saturday's action brought mixed results across multiple sports. Bryan Station's volleyball team went 2-2 in Saturday tournament play, defeating East Carter 2-0 and Mason County 2-0 while dropping matches to Rowan County 0-2 and Fleming County 1-2. In boys soccer, Lafayette blanked North Laurel 3-0 on the road, but Lexington Christian fell to Frankfort 5-1 at home. The girls soccer slate saw continued success for Frederick Douglass, who dominated Muhlenberg County 9-1 at Central Hardin; Lexington Christian also dominated Model 8-0 at home. Lafayette edged Ballard 2-0 on the road. Tates Creek fell to Lincoln County 5-2 at home, and Paul Laurence Dunbar lost to Bishop Brossart 3-2 in MAC play. In football, Paul Laurence Dunbar was defeated by South Laurel 31-7 at home, and Tates Creek lost to Woodford County 55-13 at Alvis Johnson Field.
