LEXINGTON, Ky. — Volunteers are invited to help clean up the Kentucky River during the annual Kentucky River Clean Sweep, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, according to the City of Lexington. Participants will board boats to collect trash from the 12 miles of river that border Fayette County.

For over 25 years, volunteers have gathered each June to remove litter from the waterway. The event takes place at Kelley's Landing, the city's only public park with river access, located at 8949 Old Richmond Road. Volunteers should arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. to ensure adequate time on the water. Participants will return to shore around noon for a free lunch and commemorative River Sweep t-shirt.

Those with their own canoes and kayaks are encouraged to bring them. City-provided canoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis through preregistration. Trash bags, gloves and limited supplies of adult and child-sized life vests will be provided. Volunteers should wear clothing that can get wet and bring boots or closed-toed shoes. The event proceeds rain or shine.

Participants must preregister online. Those under 18 years old must submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, which is included with online registration. Registration closes when the event reaches 100 participants. Event updates regarding weather or water conditions will be posted on Live Green Lexington's Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The City of Lexington and the Kentucky River Authority sponsor the cleanup.
