Shillito Park Road to Close for Paving Work This Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Shillito Park Road will close overnight beginning Tuesday for paving work related to ongoing construction of the city's new Senior and Therapeutic Recreation Center.
The road will be closed from W. Reynolds Road to the Shillito Aquatic Center from 7 p.m. on September 8 to 7 a.m. on September 9. Intermittent road closures will continue on September 9 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and daytime visitors are advised to drive slowly through construction areas and expect 15-minute delays.
Flaggers will be stationed to manage traffic flow. The paving is necessary to construct a new entrance for the $24 million Senior and Therapeutic Recreation Center, which city officials broke ground on in November 2024. Additional paving work is planned for early October.
The 26,000-square-foot facility will serve seniors 55 and older as well as adults and children with disabilities. The new center will consolidate senior programming that has grown beyond the capacity of Lexington's existing senior centers, which have experienced dramatic increases in participation since opening an expanded main center at Idle Hour Park in 2016. More than 3,200 seniors currently participate in programming at city senior centers, with waiting lists for popular exercise classes.
The Shillito Park location was chosen because many seniors live on the city's south side, near the Fayette Mall area. The facility will also house the city's Therapeutic Recreation program, which celebrated 70 years in 2025 after beginning in 1955. The program currently operates out of multiple locations across the city.
The center is expected to open later this year, pending completion of construction and other site improvements.
