Kipngok advances to steeplechase final on opening day of NCAA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. — Sophomore Collins Kiprop Kipngok delivered Kentucky's standout performance on the opening day of the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships, posting the fastest qualifying time in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase semifinal with a season-best 8:24.39 and advancing to Friday night's final.
The performance highlighted an otherwise challenging start for the Kentucky Wildcats at Hayward Field in Oregon. Kipngok, entering the championships ranked sixth nationally in the event, will compete for a national title on June 12 at 8:24 p.m. ET in his second career NCAA steeplechase final.
The Wildcats struggled in relay competition when the men's 4x100-meter team—featuring Anthony Waterman, Miles Jones, Oscar Baltan Vivero and TK Pahuwa—failed to advance to the final round, placing 17th overall with a time of 39.26.
Waterman, who concluded his sophomore season, competed in the men's 110-meter hurdles semifinal and finished 22nd with a time of 13.85. The sprinter achieved the No. 2 all-time mark in the event for UK during the season.
Kentucky's field event competitors also fell short in their respective finals. Long jumper Kingi McNair cleared 7.52 meters in his first NCAA Championship appearance, placing 13th, while shot putter Grayson Brashear made his debut with a mark of 18.26 meters for a 15th-place finish.
The 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue through Saturday at the University of Oregon's venue, with women's events beginning Thursday and additional opportunities for the Wildcats in pole vault, hurdles, distance races and relay events.
