The Kentucky State Police Post 12 will conduct periodic traffic safety checkpoints throughout the region covered by the Frankfort-based agency, which includes Anderson, Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Shelby, Spencer and Woodford counties, a spokesman announced on Friday.

The checkpoints will be conducted at approved locations in accordance with Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual, designed to enhance public safety on the roadways. Troopers will focus on operator impairment, vehicular equipment deficiencies including valid registration and insurance, and valid driver licensing.

"The Kentucky State Police strives daily to ensure the safety of the motoring public," a statement from KSP said. The agency noted that checkpoints represent one of several proactive measures to enhance highway safety, including saturation patrols in areas with documented safety concerns.

According to state police, traffic safety checkpoints serve to promote safety for motorists and deter violations of Kentucky law. The checkpoints emphasize occupant protection, particularly seatbelt compliance; sobriety and impaired driving detection; and verification of vehicle insurance and registration status. Other violations encountered will be addressed as circumstances warrant.

Drivers at checkpoints will be asked to present their driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. The Kentucky State Police indicate that compliant drivers with proper documentation should experience minimal delays of approximately 30 seconds to one minute.
